Jon Sumrall
Jon Sumrall flew the University Athletic Association’s Phenom 100 from Gainesville to Tuscaloosa on June 9, a 0-minute taxi-and-stop that nonetheless put him on the ground in west Alabama for an in-person visit with a coveted 2027 recruit.
The target is Kamarion Johnson, a three-star linebacker from Georgia who initially committed to NC State in the spring before reopening his recruitment in April. According to College Sports Network, Johnson cited the relationships built with Sumrall and the Florida staff — including a Mother’s Day message from the head coach — as key factors in his eventual decision to commit to the Gators over Florida State and Cincinnati. The flight falls inside the contact period, when coaches are allowed to make off-campus visits to prospects and their families.
The stop in Tuscaloosa fits the pattern of Sumrall’s early tenure: aggressive, relationship-driven recruiting that targets both blue-chip prospects and under-the-radar fits. Florida’s 2027 class now ranks No. 9 nationally per Rivals, and Johnson’s commitment adds another athletic defensive piece while giving Sumrall a head-to-head win over a divisional rival in the process.
