Evan Spiegel flew from Palma de Mallorca to EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg on June 17, a short hop of under two hours aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8 BBJ. The flight arrives just one day after Snap officially launched its first consumer augmented-reality glasses, Specs, at the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California.
The timing is telling. On June 16, Spiegel took the stage at AWE to unveil Specs, a $2,195 pair of AR glasses that Snap has been developing for nearly a decade, per a Reuters report. The launch comes as activist investor Irenic Capital Management pushes Snap to spin off or shut down the cash-burning Specs unit, which has absorbed more than $3.5 billion in investment. Snap's stock fell 9% on the day of the announcement, as covered by Dexerto. Spiegel has defended the device as a long-term bet, telling Reuters, "Our job at Snap is to drive long-term profitability."
Basel is not a typical tech hub, but the region is home to major pharmaceutical and biotech firms—potential partners for Snap's enterprise AR ambitions. Spiegel's recent flights show a pattern of transatlantic movement: he flew from California to Spain on June 14, and now continues into continental Europe. Whether this trip involves investor meetings, partnership talks, or simply a post-launch retreat, it underscores a CEO on the road during a pivotal week for his company.
