A 10-hour flight from Chennai to Melbourne places the Sun Group chairman far from a deepening legal and political crisis at home.

Kalanithi Maran
Kalanithi Maran flew his Bombardier Global 7500 from Chennai to a Melbourne-area airport on June 20, a 9-hour 52-minute trip that crossed the Indian Ocean. The destination is notable: Maran's home base is Chennai, and his recent flights have moved between Indian metros and Dubai—not Australia.
The same week, the long-simmering dispute between Maran and his younger brother, DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, escalated sharply. Dayanidhi issued a legal notice accusing Kalanithi of fraudulent share allotments dating back to 2003, per filings and coverage in The Indian Express and Bar & Bench this week. The notice threatens to seek cancellation of broadcasting and aviation licenses held by Sun Group entities, including SpiceJet. Separately, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected SpiceJet's plea for more time to deposit Rs 144 crore in an unrelated case with Maran and Kal Airways, as reported by The Economic Times.
Melbourne may simply be a personal stop—Maran has no known business holdings in Australia—but the timing suggests a deliberate distance from the very public, political drama unfolding in New Delhi and Chennai this week.
