Marathon Oil flew from Quad City International Airport to Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal on May 13, a 22-minute hop in a Gulfstream V that touched down just before 8 a.m. local time. The flight, operated by the company’s N540M, arrived the same week Marathon Petroleum Corporation reported first-quarter 2026 results, noting its Garyville jet fuel project came online and that it is progressing refinery upgrades in El Paso and Robinson, Illinois — the latter just 140 miles east of Bloomington-Normal, per a May 5 earnings release.
The Bloomington-Normal area is home to State Farm’s headquarters and Illinois State University, but the more likely draw for Marathon Oil is the proximity to Robinson, where Marathon Petroleum is targeting a third-quarter 2026 completion for a jet fuel project. The company’s CEO Maryann Mannen said the integrated system is positioned to “supply the growing domestic and export demand” for jet fuel, as reported by PRNewswire. This flight continues a multi-day swing through the Midwest: over the past 48 hours, N540M has crisscrossed Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana, a pattern consistent with site visits to refineries and midstream assets in the region.
The trip underscores Marathon Oil’s focus on operational readiness as it integrates with ConocoPhillips — a merger that closed in November 2024 and added over 2 billion barrels of reserves, per Reuters. With the Robinson jet project on the horizon, this week’s travel suggests hands-on oversight of capital projects that are central to the company’s mid-single-digit growth strategy.
