Marathon Oil flew from Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, to Spirit of St. Louis Airport on May 13, a 37-minute hop aboard its Gulfstream V, tail N540M. The short flight came at the end of a multi-stop tour through the Midwest that included visits to Wisconsin, Indiana, and Iowa over the previous two days.

The same week, the U.S. Department of Energy announced it would loan 53.3 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to nine energy companies, including Marathon Oil, per an Oil Monster report. The loans are part of a global effort to calm oil markets disrupted by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, which has shut the Strait of Hormuz and pushed domestic gasoline prices to $4.52 a gallon. Marathon Oil's participation in the SPR loan program gives it access to crude at a time when the company's refineries are running at 89% utilization and the company is investing in jet-fuel flexibility projects, per its first-quarter earnings call.

The St. Louis landing is not a known recurring destination for Marathon Oil, whose fleet typically shuttles between Houston and Oklahoma City, Minneapolis, Washington, Austin, Chicago, and Dubai. The midwestern swing suggests a series of operational or regulatory meetings tied to the company's post-merger integration with ConocoPhillips, which closed in November 2024.
