Marathon Oil
Marathon Oil flew from Dupage Airport in the Chicago suburbs to Indianapolis International Airport on May 15, a 44-minute hop aboard its Gulfstream V, tail N540M. The flight arrived just before 8 a.m. local time, a short trip that fits a pattern of regional travel across the Midwest and Great Lakes seen in the aircraft's recent flight history.
The same week this flight landed, ConocoPhillips — which completed its $22.5 billion acquisition of Marathon Oil in November 2024 — continues to integrate the former independent's assets into its Lower 48 portfolio. Per a Hart Energy report from November, the combined company aims to achieve over $500 million in annual cost and capital synergies within a year of closing, with reductions planned in the Eagle Ford and Bakken. Marathon Oil survives as a subsidiary, per the merger terms, and the Houston-based entity maintains operational footprints that require coordination across multiple basins.
The Gulfstream V's recent flights trace a looping path through Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois — states that sit near Marathon Oil's legacy Bakken supply lines and refining logistics. A Bloomberg report from May 5 noted that Marathon Petroleum Corp., the separate refiner, has been scrambling fuel cargoes amid war-disrupted supply lines; while Marathon Oil is a different entity, the regional travel pattern suggests ongoing operational meetings tied to the post-merger asset integration.
