NextEra Energy
NextEra Energy flew from Pensacola International Airport (KPNS) to a private airstrip near Panama City Beach on June 18, a 32-minute hop in its Embraer Praetor 600, N47MW. The short coastal flight — just 86 nautical miles — came the same week a federal court in Florida received a proposed $150 million settlement to resolve a class-action securities lawsuit against NextEra Energy and its subsidiary Florida Power & Light. The settlement, reported by E&E News and Utility Dive on Monday, would end litigation over allegations that the company misled investors about its involvement in Florida political misconduct schemes.
The timing is notable because the settlement agreement was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, which covers the state's Atlantic and Gulf districts. While the landing site is not a courthouse itself, the region has been a focal point for media coverage of the case. The lead plaintiffs — a police officers' retirement system and a firefighters' pension fund — argued that continuing the suit would guarantee “significant challenges, risks, and delays,” per the court filing.
This trip is the second short Gulf-side visit by the aircraft this week; on June 15 it flew from Tampa Executive Airport to the same Panama City Beach area, then returned to Palm Beach. NextEra Energy CEO John Ketchum maintains a schedule dense with regulatory and investor meetings across Florida, and this week's landing places him within an hour's drive of the state capital just as the political-legacy settlement moves toward a judge's signature. The aircraft has also been shuttling between the Midwest and Florida in recent days, consistent with the company's expansive data center and merger strategy.
