Corning flew from Elmira-Corning Regional Airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport on May 15th, a 1-hour 32-minute hop aboard its Falcon 900, tail N38CG. The trip lands in North Carolina the same week the company is executing on the largest manufacturing buildout in its 175-year history.
Just nine days earlier, Corning and Nvidia announced a multiyear partnership to dramatically expand U.S.-based manufacturing of advanced optical connectivity for AI infrastructure, per a joint press release on May 6th. The deal includes three new advanced manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Texas, creating more than 3,000 jobs, with Corning increasing its U.S. optical connectivity capacity by 10x. CEO Wendell Weeks called the partnership "proof that AI is not just a technology story. It is a manufacturing story, and it is happening here in the United States."
The flight to Charlotte continues a pattern of frequent shuttling between Corning headquarters and the Carolinas. Over the past three days, N38CG has made five trips between KELM and KCLT, suggesting active oversight of the expansion. With Corning projecting a $40 billion annualized sales run rate by 2030, per its upgraded Springboard plan unveiled the same day as the Nvidia deal, the CEO's travel schedule mirrors the company's accelerating ambitions.
