Ernesto Bertarelli flew from Farnborough to Olbia on June 15, arriving at Costa Smeralda Airport aboard his Bombardier Global 7500 (HB-JIT) after a 1-hour-56-minute flight. The trip brings the Swiss-Italian billionaire to the island the same week as the Range Rover Sardinia Cup, a major yachting regatta that returned to Porto Cervo after a 14-year hiatus, per an announcement from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
The event, which runs through June 7, features ten elite teams competing in coastal races and a 150-nautical-mile offshore leg — a type of competition Bertarelli knows well. As founder of the Alinghi team, he won the America's Cup in 2003 and 2007, making Switzerland the first European nation to claim sailing's top prize. Bertarelli previously flew from Sardinia to Geneva on June 5, and back to the island for several trips in late May, suggesting a sustained presence in the area for the regatta and related activities.
The flight from London-area Farnborough follows a transatlantic trip earlier this week, fitting a pattern of shuttling between business and sailing commitments. Bertarelli's yachting interest remains active long after his Cup victories, and Sardinia continues to anchor his summer calendar.
