SK Telecom's aircraft returns to Seoul as SK Group finalizes $500 billion AI deals

SK Telecom's Airbus A319-115X ACJ, tail number HL8080, was tracked departing Istanbul Atatürk Airport on July 31 and landing at Gimpo International Airport on August 1, a flight of just under ten hours. The aircraft, configured for corporate and delegation travel, had been operating in European airspace in the days prior, with positions logged near Sicily and the Balkans on July 28. If SK Telecom representatives were aboard, they would be returning to Seoul the same week SK Group announced a sweeping set of AI infrastructure partnerships in San Francisco. Per a report from The Korea Herald, SK Group and Nvidia unveiled more than $500 billion in planned cooperation, including the construction of up to 2 gigawatts of AI data centers powered by Nvidia's Vera Rubin GPU platform and SK Hynix's HBM4 memory. The Straits Times further reported that SK Telecom separately signed agreements with Anthropic and Amazon Web Services for gigawatt-scale AI data centers in South Korea, while SK Hynix deepened its long-term memory supply deal with Microsoft.

The timing of the flight — arriving in Seoul just days after the San Francisco AI Summit, where South Korean President Lee Jae Myung hosted executives from Nvidia, OpenAI, and Broadcom — fits a pattern of executive travel tied to major deal-making. SK Telecom's aircraft has previously been tracked on long-haul legs to San Francisco and Shannon, the latter being a common tech-industry transit point and the location of an SK Group subsidiary. The July 28 European positions may represent a stopover on the return from the U.S. West Coast, though no direct Seoul–San Francisco leg appears in recent data.

This is not the first time SK Telecom's corporate jet has moved in lockstep with a major industry announcement. The aircraft's recurring destinations — San Francisco, London, Tokyo — mirror the company's expanding AI and semiconductor partnerships. With SK Telecom now targeting 15 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2035 and spinning off a dedicated subsidiary, SK Hyper, the aircraft's flight log is likely to remain busy. For now, the A319 is back at its home base, and the ink is drying on a half-trillion-dollar vision.
