Jon Sumrall
Jon Sumrall flew from Tuscaloosa to Gainesville late Wednesday night, a 59-minute hop in the university’s Phenom 100 that landed just after local midnight. The June 3 trip falls in the NCAA’s spring evaluation period, a window when coaches can make off-campus contacts and evaluate prospects at their high schools. The destination — Tuscaloosa, home of the Alabama Crimson Tide — suggests Sumrall was working the state’s fertile recruiting grounds for players the Gators have identified as priorities.
The most likely name on the itinerary is Jared White, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive tackle from Tuscaloosa’s Hillcrest High School, per 247Sports. White is a rising junior in the 2027 class and holds offers from Florida, Alabama, Auburn and Georgia, among others. Sumrall and his staff have made him an early priority as they rebuild Florida’s offensive line depth, and an in-person visit during the evaluation period carries weight in a recruitment that will stretch into next year.
Florida’s athletics foundation logs heavy December-January flying into South Florida and Atlanta, but the Tuscaloosa trip marks an unusual detour into enemy territory. Sumrall is methodically expanding the Gators’ recruiting footprint beyond the state’s borders, targeting players in talent-rich pockets where Florida can win a one-on-one evaluation. If he lands a lineman from Alabama’s backyard, the 59-minute red-eye will have been worth it.
