Jon Sumrall flew from a private ranch airstrip near Gainesville to Tuscaloosa on Tuesday afternoon, landing at 1:46 p.m. local time on the University Athletic Association’s Phenom 100. The 63-minute hop placed the first-year Florida head coach squarely inside enemy territory — Alabama’s backyard — during a contact period when in-person evaluations are allowed.
Sumrall was in Tuscaloosa to recruit Jalen Brewster, a five-star defensive lineman ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite for the 2027 class. Brewster committed to Texas Tech in February but visited Florida over the weekend and has been a prime flip target for Sumrall’s staff, per Sports Illustrated and multiple recruiting outlets. The Gators are also heavily involved with four-star defensive lineman Tyler Alexander and other front-seven prospects in the region, but Brewster’s visit to Gainesville — and now Sumrall’s return trip — signals a focused push.
Sumrall has already flipped four-star cornerback Aamaury Fountain from South Carolina and landed five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller, building a 2027 class that ranks No. 10 nationally per Rivals. Chasing a five-star from a Big 12 commitment inside the state of Alabama, however, requires a face-to-face pitch — and that is exactly what Tuesday’s flight delivered.
