Jon Sumrall flew N101FG, the University Athletic Association’s Phenom 100, from K0J0 (Abbeville Municipal) to a private strip near Tuscaloosa on the night of June 10, a 36-minute hop across the Georgia-Alabama line. The June contact period allows off-campus, in-person meetings with prospects, making this a permissible in-home visit window for the Florida head coach.
The destination — Abbeville, Alabama — points to Kamarion Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound three-star athlete from Clinch County High in Homerville, Georgia, who committed to Jon Sumrall and the Gators on June 4 after de-committing from NC State in April. Johnson, recruited as a versatile defensive back, told College Football Network that the head coach’s personal outreach, including a Mother’s Day message, sealed the deal: “The head coach constantly texting me and my family to make sure we’re good is a great feeling.” Florida beat out Florida State and Cincinnati for Johnson’s pledge.
The visit underscores the aggressive recruiting footprint Jon Sumrall has built in just seven months on the job. Florida’s 2027 class, now with 21 commitments and ranked No. 5 nationally per AtoZ Sports, has been built on South Georgia and Alabama border talent. Earlier this week Sumrall flipped four-star corner Aamaury Fountain from South Carolina, per Rivals, and landed five-star offensive lineman Maxwell Hiller. This stop — deep in Alabama, far from Gainesville — is Sumrall keeping a pledge warm.
