Jon Sumrall
Jon Sumrall flew from State Prison Field in Florida to Syracuse Hancock International Airport on June 18, a 2-hour, 4-minute trip in the University Athletic Association’s Phenom 300 (N100FG). The flight arrived during a quiet period on the NCAA recruiting calendar, when in-person contact with prospects is limited to campus visits — but the portal remains open, and coaches can initiate contact with transfer targets at any time.
Into Central New York, where Florida is chasing a specific veteran defensive back from Syracuse’s roster, as 247Sports reported this week. The player, a projected starting cornerback who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, is a priority for the Gators after the secondary lost several contributors to the NFL and the portal this offseason. Jon Sumrall’s program is in the market for experienced defensive help, and the trip aligns with recent visits to the Northeast corridor for Florida’s staff.
The Gators’ 2026 recruiting class currently ranks in the top 15, per On3, but the transfer portal remains the quickest path to filling immediate needs. Jon Sumrall and his staff have been aggressive in the portal since taking over, and a veteran cornerback with Power Four starting experience fits the profile. Syracuse, a program that posted a 10-win season in 2024, has produced multiple portal departures this spring — and Florida appears to be circling one of the biggest available names.
