Adrian Hanauer, born 1966, took over the second-division Sounders in 2001 and was the local money in the 2007 expansion bid that brought MLS to Seattle — Joe Roth at 35%, Hanauer at 32.5%, Paul Allen at 25% through his stadium interest, and Drew Carey as the fourth name on the letterhead. The club started play in 2009 and has led MLS in attendance for most of its existence. Roth handed him majority ownership in November 2015. In 2019 about 20% of the club went to eleven new investor families including Russell Wilson, Ciara and Macklemore.
The trophies: MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019, both over Toronto; the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League, the first won by an MLS club in the tournament's current format; the 2025 Leagues Cup, which made Seattle the only American club holding all three. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup went the other way — three group games at Lumen Field against Botafogo, Atlético Madrid and PSG, three defeats, out at the group stage. He also holds a minority stake in the Kraken and is governor of Seattle Reign FC.
His own business is Museum Quality Framing, which he founded in 1988 and grew into the largest custom-framing chain in the Northwest; the family's Pacific Coast Feather Company, a Seattle bedding manufacturer dating to 1884, was sold in 2018. He was an early investor in Amazon and in aQuantive. His brother is Nick Hanauer, the venture capitalist and political activist behind Second Avenue Partners.
