Howard Schultz bought Starbucks from its founders in 1987, having failed to convince them that the Milan espresso bar was the business. He ran it as CEO from 1987 to 2000, returned in 2008 when the stock had collapsed, stepped back to executive chairman in 2017, came back a third time as interim CEO in April 2022, and handed off to Laxman Narasimhan in March 2023.
