Stuart Sloan ran Schuck's Auto Supply before taking over Quality Food Centers with Jack Croco in 1986, taking it public in 1987, pushing it up-market against the regional chains and selling it to Fred Meyer for $1.7B in 1998. He co-founded Egghead Software, runs Sloan Capital Companies, and owns University Village — the open-air shopping center in northeast Seattle that is among the highest-grossing retail properties per square foot in the country. He lives in Denny Blaine. No reliable current net-worth figure is published, and the ones that circulate are artifacts of stock-disclosure scrapers rather than real estimates.

His philanthropy has been unusually concentrated. From 1998 he committed around $1M a year for at least eight years to a single Seattle public school, T.T. Minor Elementary — class sizes down to twenty, free pre-K, meals, healthcare, teaching assistants — reported at the time as the largest single gift ever made to an American public school. Scores rose after 2001; the district closed the school in 2009 on cost grounds anyway. In 2022 he and his wife gave $78M to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, the largest gift the institution had received.

He was also, as KUOW revealed in May 2024, the anonymous $550,000 donor behind a proposed playground at Denny Blaine Park — a long-established nude beach next to his house. The Stranger later reported he had sent photographs of unconsenting beachgoers to city officials including the mayor. The plan was abandoned.

He does not sit for photographs. A 2013 Seattle Times profile records that he declined to be photographed for it, and KUOW's 2024 piece stated flatly that no pictures of him could be found online. The portrait here is from QFC's own 1989 annual report — a studio group shot of the four executives with each man's signature printed beneath him, which is why it can be attributed with certainty. He was about 46. It appears to be the only published photograph of him in circulation.

N18S is a 2015 Gulfstream G550, serial 5531, hex A13FE3, registered to 5531 LLC at an address in northeast Seattle — the LLC is named after the airframe's serial number, which is a tidy piece of registry housekeeping and also the only reason the two are obviously the same thing. Spotted at Boeing Field. No press has ever tied Sloan to it by name.
