Jon Sumrall's jet returns from the Panhandle — another defensive back in play?

An Embraer Phenom 100 owned by the University Athletic Association Inc. was tracked departing Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport on the morning of June 26 and arriving back at Gainesville Regional just over an hour later. The aircraft — N101FG, one of two Phenoms operated by the Gators' athletic arm — made the 190-nautical-mile hop at 19,000 feet, touching down just after 12:40 UTC.

If Jon Sumrall was on the flight, the timing points into the thick of Florida's June official-visit window. The Panhandle is home to Florida State's backyard, and Sumrall has been aggressively working rivals territory. Per On3, the Gators recently landed a pledge from three-star Georgia safety Kamarion Johnson — a recruit who was also considering Cincinnati and Florida State before his commitment this month. Johnson's decision was attributed in part to what he called “the fire in his eyes” during his official visit, per Rivals. The region along the Emerald Coast also holds a cluster of uncommitted 2027 defensive backs, including a handful with offers from both UF and FSU.

Sumrall has assembled a top-five recruiting class for the 2027 cycle, per the 247Sports Composite, and the program's push into the Panhandle reflects his stated priority of winning the state's borders. With June official visits wrapping up and the dead period looming in July, the short flight fits a pattern of intense relationship maintenance — especially with players who may be flip targets from the in-state rival down the road in Tallahassee.
