Gianluigi Aponte is an Italian-born Swiss billionaire shipping magnate who founded Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 1970 with his wife Rafaela, building it from a single-vessel operation into the world's largest container shipping company. Born in 1940 in Sorrento, Italy, he began his career as a sea captain before transitioning to banking and then founding MSC. The Geneva-headquartered group now operates over 1,000 vessels, employs 200,000 people, and generated revenues of $86.4 billion in 2022. Aponte owns two Dassault Falcon 2000 series private jets with Swiss registrations HB-JGD and HB-JGG. In April 2025, he transferred ownership of MSC to his children Diego and Alexa while remaining as executive chairman. MSC has expanded into cruises, port terminals, logistics, and air cargo.
