Jon Shirley came to Microsoft in 1983 after 25 years at Tandy, and was the adult in the room for the next seven: president, COO and director of a company that had 350 employees and $50M in revenue when he arrived and cleared $1B before he stepped back in 1990. The 1986 IPO and the Redmond campus were both built on his watch, and he stayed on the board until 2008. Born 1938; lives in Medina, across Lake Washington from the company he ran.
With his late wife Mary he assembled one of the most significant private collections of Alexander Calder anywhere, along with broader modern and contemporary holdings; the Calder collection has since gone to the Seattle Art Museum.
